Understanding Australian Slang
The words you'll hear every day that aren't in any textbook
Australians shorten everything — and the slang changes by region. Here's a survival guide to what you'll actually hear on campus and at work.
The Essentials
'Arvo' = afternoon. 'Brekkie' = breakfast. 'Maccas' = McDonald's. 'Servo' = service station. 'Bottle-o' = liquor shop. 'Defo' = definitely. 'No worries' = you're welcome / no problem / okay (it's the universal response).
Campus Slang
'Tutes' = tutorials. 'Lecs' = lectures. 'O-Week' = orientation week. 'SWOTVAC' = study week before exams. 'HD' = high distinction (the top grade). 'Plag' = plagiarism. 'Due yesterday' = it's urgent.
Social Slang
'Bring a plate' means bring food to share, not an empty plate. 'BYO' = bring your own (drinks). 'Shout' = buying a round for the group. 'Bogan' = uncultured person (mildly derogatory). 'Sickie' = taking a sick day off work.
What Not to Copy
Avoid swearing in casual settings until you understand the context — Australians swear more than most cultures, but there are boundaries. Don't use slang in academic writing or professional emails. When unsure, 'How are you?' works perfectly.
