Post-Study Work Visa Options
The 485 visa, regional pathways, and what comes after graduation
After graduation, many students want to stay and work in Australia. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is the main pathway โ but the rules have changed recently.
The 485 Visa Streams
The Post-Study Work stream is for graduates who completed a degree in Australia. Duration depends on your qualification: 2 years for bachelor's, 3 years for master's by coursework, and longer for research degrees. You must apply within 6 months of graduation.
Regional Pathways
Studying in a regional area (outside major cities) can give you extra time on your 485 visa โ up to 2 additional years. Regional Australia also offers the 491 (skilled regional) visa pathway, which can lead to permanent residency. Check which postcodes qualify as regional.
English and Health Requirements
You'll need to meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent) and pass health and character checks. Budget for these costs โ the medical exam alone costs $300โ$400. Health insurance (OVHC) replaces your student OSHC.
Plan for Permanent Residency
The 485 is temporary โ it buys time to gain work experience and pursue skilled migration. Research the Skilled Occupation List, check if your profession is listed, and monitor points-based visa requirements. Consider consulting a registered migration agent (MARA-registered) for personalised advice.
