Building Credit History as an International Student
Why it matters and how to start — even without a permanent visa
Credit history affects renting, phone plans, and even some job applications in Australia. Here's how to build a good credit profile while you study.
Start with a Phone Plan
A post-paid mobile plan is one of the easiest ways to establish credit. Providers like Optus, Vodafone, and Telstra report to credit bureaus. Pay on time every month. Avoid late payments — they stay on your file for years.
Use a Credit Card Wisely
Some banks offer student credit cards with low limits ($500–$1,000). Use it for small purchases and pay the full balance each month. Never carry a balance — the interest rates are high. This builds a positive repayment history.
Always Pay Bills on Time
Utility bills, internet, and rent (via services like RentPay) can contribute to your credit file. Set up direct debit so you never miss a payment. Even one default can make future applications difficult.
Check Your Credit File
You're entitled to a free credit report each year from Equifax, illion, or Experian. Check it for errors. A good credit score helps with rental applications, car loans, and post-study plans. It's never too early to start building.
