Top 10 Things to Pack for Australia
Skip the unnecessary — these are the essentials you'll actually use
Packing for Australia is different from packing for most countries. The climate, lifestyle, and availability of goods changes what's truly essential.
Universal Power Adapter
Australia uses Type I sockets (240V). Bring at least two adapters. Power boards from home won't fit Australian wall sockets. You can buy cheap adapters at Kmart or Officeworks, but having one for your first night saves stress.
Light Layers, Not Heavy Coats
Even winter in most Australian cities is mild (10–18°C). A good jacket and a couple of hoodies are enough. Don't waste luggage space on heavy winter gear unless you're heading to Tasmania.
Sun Protection
Australia has one of the highest UV indexes in the world. Bring SPF 50+ sunscreen from home (it's expensive here), a hat, and quality sunglasses. You'll need them from day one.
Prescriptions and Medical Records
Bring enough prescription medication for 3–6 months plus a doctor's letter. Australian pharmacies need a local prescription to dispense many medications. Carry your vaccination records in English.
