Health Insurance (OSHC) Explained
What your policy covers, what it doesn't, and how to use it
Overseas Student Health Cover is mandatory — but most students never learn how to use it properly until they need it. Don't wait until you're sick.
What OSHC Covers
OSHC covers doctor (GP) consultations, hospital treatment, ambulance transport, and some prescription medications. The exact coverage varies by provider (Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, NIB). Check your policy's 'Summary of Benefits' document.
What It Doesn't Cover
Dental, optical, physiotherapy, and psychology are generally not included in basic OSHC. If you need these, consider 'Extras' cover or budget for out-of-pocket costs. Pre-existing conditions may have waiting periods — check before seeking treatment.
Direct Billing Saves Money
Find a GP clinic that does 'direct billing' (bulk billing for OSHC). They charge your insurer directly — you pay nothing. Without direct billing, you pay upfront and claim a partial refund, often losing $20–$40 per visit.
Keep Your Membership Active
If your OSHC lapses, your visa is technically in breach. Set up auto-renewal. If you switch providers, ensure there's no gap in coverage. Always carry your membership card — hospitals and GPs need to see it.
