Orientation Week: Make the Most of It
One week that shapes your entire university experience
O-Week isn't just free pizza and t-shirt giveaways. It's the single best opportunity to build your social and academic foundation. Here's how to maximise it.
Join 2-3 Clubs (Not 10)
Sign up for clubs you genuinely care about โ not every stall that offers free food. Two or three clubs you actively attend beat ten you never visit. Sports clubs, cultural societies, and academic associations are the most consistent social anchors.
Campus Tour Is Essential
Find your lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, library, printing services, and food outlets before classes start. Knowing where you're going on day one eliminates the most common first-week stress. Take photos of room numbers.
Meet Your Faculty
Attend your faculty welcome session. You'll meet your academic advisor, learn key dates, and understand support services. Introduce yourself โ these are the people who'll help when you need extension requests or career advice.
Don't Overdo the Parties
O-Week events are fun, but exhaustion by week 1 sets a bad tone. Go to 2โ3 social events, not every single one. You have 3+ years to socialise โ the first week of classes is where your grades start.
