Understanding Australian Grading Systems

What HD, D, C, and P actually mean โ€” and how they convert

25 April 2026 3 min read

Australian grading is different from most systems. A 75% feels low to many international students, but in Australia it's a Distinction โ€” a strong grade.

The Grading Scale

HD (High Distinction) = 85โ€“100%. D (Distinction) = 75โ€“84%. C (Credit) = 65โ€“74%. P (Pass) = 50โ€“64%. N (Fail) = below 50%. Some universities use different boundaries โ€” check your course outline for exact thresholds.

Why 75% Isn't 'Low'

Australian exams and assignments often have no single 'correct' answer. Marks above 80 require genuine originality. A 75% (Distinction) is the equivalent of an A in many international systems. Don't panic if your first marks seem 'lower' than home.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Some universities convert letter grades to a GPA on a 7-point scale (HD=7, D=6, C=5, P=4). This matters for scholarships, honours entry, and some graduate programs. Most employers care more about skills and experience than exact GPA.

Appealing a Grade

If you believe a grade is unfair, you can request a review. Start by asking your tutor for feedback. If unresolved, submit a formal appeal through your faculty. Deadlines are tight โ€” usually 10โ€“14 days after results are released.
